So what is the problem?

 

Nursing is the most trusted profession in the country. For 19 consecutive years. So why are so many of us treated so poorly? Well, I've done a lot of research trying to understand the problem while working in ERs across the country over the past five years, and I've come up with a lot of ideas.

If nurses are going to create a better future for ourselves and for the next generation, we must start by getting the facts straight. Much of the perspective coming from nursing schools is fed to us by faculty who have not worked at the bedside since before COVID. Some of them have not set foot inside a hospital in a decade or more.

Nurse communities on the internet are dominated by sneaky travel agency advertisements, apparel-selling nurse influencers, and non-nurse copywriters who are paid by the word to write articles full of bad advice. This ecosystem leaves us with no tools or energy to improve ourselves, advance our careers, and create a system that gives our patients the care they deserve.

I created Scrubs to Sunset as a place for all those interested in doing nursing better — beginning with our individual lives and pushing outward, until major healthcare and labor reform is achieved.
